Running my business: Shelley, from The Dandelion Den

Business and starting up online

In this feature meet the inspiring women who set up and run their dream businesses. See what makes these entrepreneurs tick, where they get their inspiration from, and how they manage work and home life.

Shelley, The Dandelion Den

Here we talk to Shelley, a Mum of boy & girl twins, who runs the online business The Dandelion Den, which sells gorgeous and stylish home-ware and accessories for little ones.

Starting up a business

So Shelley, what is your background?

I was born in Brighton and still live here now in a house by the sea with my 4-year old twins Summer and Ronnie, my husband Rob and kitten Tiger. I did a degree in media and communication studies and then worked  in London for 6 years at the children’s charity SPARKS as Head of Events. After leaving SPARKS I joined the Grounded Events Company to set up the first Brighton Marathon, where I still work part-time as an Events Production Manager.

Why & when did you start your business?

I had always wanted to set up my own business and have had loads of ideas over the years, but when my twins were born I naturally started focusing on a business relating to products or services for children and parents and that’s when The Dandelion Den was born. As a result of my own interest in trying to find cool and unique items for their rooms I wanted to provide a place for parents to find lovely stuff all in one place! I spend hours on Instagram and Pinterest sourcing items from all around the world. I launched in May and am working hard to raise the profile and increase exposure as I’m up against so many other similar amazing businesses.

Where do you work from?

Home! I also do social media stuff though while I’m out and about.

How many people do you employ?

Just me. I’d love to collaborate with someone though and/or launch another business with someone else as it can get lonely and would be great to bounce ideas around with someone else.

Where do you get your inspiration/ideas for the business?

My children, Facebook groups, Instagram, bloggers and Pinterest.

How many children do you have?

I have boy/girl twins aged 4, who are so much fun!

How do you balance work and your own family life?

It was so much harder before the twins started school but now I have my set days to work on my business and plan my time carefully. I’ll also do things in the evening when the twins are in bed. I rarely do work at the weekends as we tend to go out and about. It is hard at times to balance the time.

What does the future hold for your business?

I’ve got lots of business ideas both to expand The Dandelion Den and a new business idea. My husband often tells me to slow down and focus on one thing at a time but I’m very determined, driven and motivated I just can’t help it!

What is it with twin mums?? I am still yet to meet one who *doesn’t* want to take on the world!! Running a business is hard work at the best of times but even more so with tiny twins in tow!! I can vouch for that!! LOL! Great post — love the products that Shelly has chosen! CX #HomeEtc

Oh gosh, what gorgeous products!!! I’ll have to pop over and see what I can pick up for the boys’ stockings, this Christmas. I always pop something cuddly in and I love the little cushions.
