When I started my blog over 3 years ago it was mostly bloggers who read other blogs. Within parenting blogging there were only really a few super-popular bloggers at that time whose blog posts went viral or who won all the awards! No-one had really started getting book deals or TV adverts or having super-star status on Instagram. In fact, Instagram wasn’t really even a thing then!
Right now though it feels like everyone (and their dog) has a blog or Instagram account – or both. It feels increasingly harder and more challenging to create exciting and different content, as well as to stand out. And as for rapidly growing your following…yeah, tough times!
But as more and more people are influenced to shop and buy online these days there is still a huge appetite for blogging and social media, and it is growing. Which is why it is worth being a part of it! More brands are working with small, medium and large scale influencers and are realising their potential to them as part of their overall marketing strategy.
But just HOW do you stand out and keep people reading your blog/watching your material?
Here are a few ways you can do it:
Even though you don’t need to be particularly niche, being different is worth it. Especially if you’re coming in new right now. Think about your passions and how you can appeal to people. What could you do or bring that hasn’t been done yet? Hard to do I know, but it does help when people are being bombarded with a lot of content these days. Being memorable helps!
That said, ALWAYS be yourself. Influencing is full-on and 24/7 and so if you’re not being yourself it will be too tiring to keep up. Plus, people do genuinely see through any fake behaviour and so authentic is always best. Look at the best parts of you – what do other people love about you? Humour, advice, are you great at telling stories? Play to your strengths and really push that.
You can’t really expect to get great blog opportunities and paid work without putting in a lot of hard work these days. As there is so much competition out there it really means putting in a lot of effort and hours. But hard work does pay off and I have definitely noticed this with my own blog and workload myself. It has led onto other things and I am currently working freelance alongside my blog, managing social media for several clients.
Everything you say or do online stays with you. People form a perception of you from the small amount of interaction they have with you. Be nice to everyone you meet or work with – you literally never know when your paths may cross again. Plus it’s just a good thing to be a nice person, right?
Stay ahead of the game, think of new ideas and push yourself. If something seems to be working for you then keep building it and don’t get complacent!
In blogging and influencing it often feels as though EVERYONE else around you seems to be getting more followers, opportunities and working with all the best brands. However this isn’t the case! Keep focused on your own goals, no matter how small or large they are, and remembering your own reasons for being involved in the industry. Whenever you get an achievement really think about how good that is! Comparing yourself to other people will only make you doubt yourself.
If you’re enjoying what you do then it doesn’t feel a chore! Keep laughing and creating stuff you love!
Love, Jess x
