Styling a shirt

styling-a-shirt

As I get ready to enter my 40’s later on this year (#fortyiscoming) style isn’t something that I’m willing to compromise on. In fact, I’m feeling more confident and happy than I have done for some time now…and fashion is probably more important to me than ever.

But at 39 I’m feeling as though it’s that fine line between looking too trendy (teenager) or frumpy (hello too much comfort).

As you can see from my style posts and Instagram photos I’m no trend setter. I like what I like and it usually isn’t wacky. I’ve tried to be a fashionista (believe me)…I follow all the stylish influencers and I’ve tried to emulate their style, but it’s just not me. I like a mix of jeans, blouses, blazers, t-shirts, heels, earrings, trainers, long coats, sometimes a skirt or a dress, and occasionally a statement piece, like a leather jacket.

One item of clothing I do love to wear on repeat is a shirt. With a pair of jeans this feels a really smart/casual look and is perfect for the kind of life I lead — i.e. working from home, doing the school run, shopping, meeting up with friends.

For me, a shirt feels grown up, mature, stylish…but with some bleached jeans it gives an outfit more of an ‘on-trend’ feel.

I’d add a blazer in for cooler days and a pair of trainers for the school run.

The White Company kindly sent me some gorgeous pieces recently, which are SO lovely. I can’t explain how soft and high quality this shirt feels. Their spring/summer catalogue arrived through my door a few weeks ago and so much from it is absolutely gorgeous (for the twins clothing too).

I don’t think you can go wrong with a shirt and a pair of jeans — and don’t even get me started on this straw bag.

Love, Jess x

I’m in my fifties I still favour a shirt and jeans. Continue to wear what suits you as you get older. I’ve just discovered mules with jeans and shirt nothing changes I still enjoy clothes and things I’ve not worn in thd past. Women in their forties and fifties and sixties don’t do frump anymore. You do style in your thirties and you just continue on.

Absolutely – I’m really enjoying style and wearing things that make me happy. Glad you are too 🙂 xx

I think your style is perfect. I love following your insta and blogs.
I to love a shirt/smart top with jeans (I have just a few pairs!)
I’m 42 and have a 13 year old daughter so I know to well that fine line of staying stylish yet not buying clothing that my daughter would wear, especially since we’re now the same height and shoe size (she borrows enough of my make up) Tx

I think we have all been there with trying to take on other people’s style, I’m so guilty of trying styles that just don’t suit me. I think for me, it is all about finding the perfect style for my shape and what suits me. I do love a classic outfit and pieces I can mix up a bit. I love your shirt, I’ve been searching for the perfect spring/summer shirt for a while but the ones I have tried on have no shape. I’m very petite (5ft nothing) so need something a little more fitted as not to drown me out. I think your style is fab and take a lot of inspiration from your posts.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it – and yes it is all about finding pieces that suit you and you feel confident in. xx

Love these pics Jess — you look beautiful. I’ve got a really similar bag to that one — it’s donkeys years old but I might bring it up to date with some pom-poms 😉

No matter how hard I try, I just feel too masculine in a shirt – I can’t get it right! I think sometimes when we aren’t used to seeing ourselves in certain styles/colours, it just looks wrong. I’ve got a lovely navy blue shirt but am struggling to style it well. Thanks for the inspiration here – think I just need a straw bag! xx

I know what you mean by this! I think a few top buttons undone, sleeve rolled up, some jewellery and skinny jeans on the bottom helps the look appear more feminine. xx

Gorgeous photos, you look really beautiful Jess. I know what you mean about being a trend trailblazer type of thing- that’s not me at all, I prefer not to get too swayed by all he current trends and prefer to go more with what suits me and my lifestyle, thowing in a few statement pieces. Im a big fan of shirts too- this one is so nice! xx

Oh thanks lovely — too kind! I do prefer to stick to pieces I know and wear them well 🙂 I always feel really self conscious when I am too trendy! xx
