In this series (which I absolutely love creating) I’m chatting to fashion influencers and women in the style industry about their backgrounds, experiences, family life, fashion advice and style tips. Today is the turn of Kerri-Ann; a good blogging friend of mine, who is also one of the most stylish ladies you’ll find online.
Kerri-Ann (or KA to her friends) is a 30-something full-time working Mum to George, her 6-year old boy. She lives with her husband in Staffordshire in their beautifully renovated Victorian Town House along with their family dog. She loves taking photos and writing her blog — Life As Our Little Family — which is a journal of their life together as a family. She also writes about fashion and her home style.
How did you get into being a blogger & influencer?
I kind of fell into it. I started chatting to a Mummy online who had a baby the same age, she was setting up a parenting website after already having a successful blog and Instagram page and with a little push, the rest as they say, is history. It has been over 4 years now. Initially my focus was very much around family and parenting whereas more recently it has moved towards fashion & lifestyle. I’d say that’s because I’ve found my confidence again when it comes to fashion. I have always loved fashion but will admit that I lost my way when I fell pregnant and for a couple of years after that. My blog will always be a storybook of life as our little family, my online journal with the addition of a few fashion posts thrown in as I love styling so much.
Where do you get your inspiration from for your outfits?
I love flicking through fashion magazines, circling outfits or tearing out pages and creating a mood board. And then of course Instagram and Pinterest — I spend far too many hours scrolling through my favourite fashion bloggers and brands on Instagram — it is definitely one of my favourite pastimes. Such a great source of outfit inspiration and styling tips, although it can be very expensive!
What’s your signature style — do you have any favourite pieces, or outfits you love to wear?
I love denim whether a pair of jeans or a skirt — a must for any wardrobe as it transfers through the seasons. You’ll also find me lusting over a pleated skirt, a midi dress and a blazer.
Zara, H&M & Topshop
Any favourite trends you have been wearing this spring/summer ‘18?
My summer style tends to be the same most years with maybe one or two ‘on’ trend pieces thrown in as I just can’t resist! This year I added spots and a pair of loafers but as a general rule you’ll find me in floaty boho style dresses (my absolute favourite style), bardot tops and kimono’s over denim.
What’s your advice for women who have lost their way with their style, or are stuck in a style rut?
Firstly grab a coffee and then lets get started on a really good wardrobe detox. Think yes, no, maybe and definitely no. I love helping friends with this so maybe ask a friend to help you. I’m about to tackle my wardrobe actually as I always find I have far more in there than I remember, sometimes you just need to add one or two pieces rather than buying the whole of Zara. And so, have a really good rummage through your wardrobe, pull everything out so that you can see all the pieces and start to think about what you enjoy wearing, what doesn’t make you so happy anymore or feel uncomfortable in. I think it’s important to remember that trends change but you always need the classics in your wardrobe. Those pieces you can update with a new accessory. I tend to have a wardrobe for every season and then a few pieces which follow me throughout the year. I love packing away my winter wardrobe and bringing more colour into the room with my spring/summer wardrobe. Exciting times, I do love a good declutter.
How do you juggle work, your blog and your busy family life?
Oh crikey, with military precision and great difficulty some days. I am very lucky that Mr H is very supportive of my blog and often leaves me to it and cracks on with running the house, he’s also the chef in our house, not that I can’t cook but its his passion. I’m the dish washer. And then the rest really is a juggling act what with having a full-time job and a love for fitness and all of George’s classes. I try to utilise every spare moment outside of being a Mummy so before and after work, after bedtime etc. When we are together as a family I am conscious of using my phone too much and if I over step the mark the boys are very good at reminding me.
Any advice for anyone wanting to start a style blog or Instagram account?
Think about the name of your blog or Instagram page, it can often be detrimental down the lane to change it, but of course not impossible. For me it is good photos, invest in a good camera and if you don’t have a natural eye for photography then do consider taking a course or researching tips for taking good photos. In the first instance natural light and good angles really do help. It can be hard work building a brand which ultimately a style blog or Instagram page is and so you need to find a way of drawing people in. In terms of how to take photos then personally I would use a tripod and a timer, failing that do you have a friend or knows you well or even one who understands the world of blogging or Instagram. And lastly an Instagram husband. Mr H despite often grumbling seems to have really taken to capturing my outfits, I even saw him adjusting his angle on Monday without prompt!
