Pre-children, I used to be an active member of a gym. I went 3/4 times a week after work and really enjoyed classes such as circuit & step aerobics as well as using the pool. I felt fit and healthy. However, two kids later, and I’ve been struggling to manage an on/off relationship with running. It’s just been far too easy to find an excuse not to go.
Joining David Lloyd Health Club a few weeks ago has therefore come along at the right time. For us all.
My Hubby has currently been on his own health mission lately and has lost over a stone in weight from cycling a few times a week. He was therefore really keen to join David Lloyd and vary his workouts. It is ideal for him as it’s local to his work (Worcester) and he can therefore pop in before & after work and at lunchtime.
For me, I have only ever been to David Lloyd with the whole family so far, but when the twins go back to preschool in September I am going to use it on my own during the week. I’ll drop them off and then head over there. I’ve already tried a few classes (which have been popular and run professionally). The main gym is huge and caters for every kind of exercise and training you could wish for.
They seem to have EVERY kind of class going – on almost every hour of the day – so there’s something for everyone. Booking these classes is really easy too; just download the app to your phone and you can do it within seconds, as I am per below.
Family friendly feel
The real highlight for us so far though has been how family friendly it is. I mean, it REALLY is. I always feel anxious when we are in general public places that the twins might disrupt other people by being noisy, but this health club makes you feel welcome. It has excellent facilities for families.
In the swimming changing area they have a separate family room which has plenty of large family cubicles and then facilities such as baby change, toilets, showers, sinks and free use of hairdryers. We’ve been during the school holidays and at weekends and it’s never felt too busy or crowded.
The family-friendly feel continues throughout their main areas. In the cafe/restaurant there’s a separate children’s area, with cBeebies on TV, iPads for kids, drawing area, toys and a play area outside. You therefore never feel as though you’re bothering anyone when you’re in there. There’s also a separate quieter area in there for adults wanting to work. The cafe area also has free iMacs to use.
The whole facility has free wifi too…yay!
The food is delicious and not overpriced. For a burger (which we highly recommend) it’s around £9 and around £2.50 for the kids meals. We have eaten there on a Sunday a few times now.
They also run an on-site creche, which is £4.50 per child per hour, where you can drop them off safely and go for a workout. As well as this they run plenty of other classes such as Mini Active & Crafts with the same idea (these are not at an extra cost). We’ve used these classes a few times now and the twins have really enjoyed it.
They also run plenty of activities and classes for older ones too – allowing parents to workout or relax and use the pool & spa.
There are three pools, two of which are ideal for the twins (aged 4) who are currently learning to swim and get more confident in the water. I must say that these pools are never crowded and always have plenty of floats & aids to use. There is always a lifeguard on duty during the daytime hours and we feel safe; in fact, I have taken them swimming there on my own a few times and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing this previously.
When we went to Greece in June the twins were a little scared of the water; they liked the pool but were afraid to splash about. This is because it has been difficult for me to take two babies swimming at once over the years. However, since joining David Lloyd they are now jumping in, growing in confidence and love trying to swim!
The Worcester facility also has an outdoor pool which looks so inviting on a hot summers day!
Whether you’re an experienced player or a complete beginner, they’ve got everything needed to improve your game and increase your confidence. They have access to coaches as well as plenty of classes and courts. My Hubby and the twins are particularly enjoying using these facilities and it’s great watching them playing together.
The next few months
My only reservation is keeping up the momentum with fitness and using the facilities, but I do think we will. It’s such a great place to spend quality time with the family plus it’s keeping us fit and active. It feels as though it is so much more than just another gym, more of a lifestyle too – for our whole family.
So watch this space and I’ll keep you posted!
Love, Jess x
