Life lately: It’s still January, Big Little Lies and relationships

I haven’t written one of these ‘life lately’ posts in ages – so I thought I would sit down and do one just to encapsulate things that are going on for us as we start a new year. 2018 has already been lovely and also a busy new start too for our little family.

It’s still January

Yep, it still is. Only just – but it feels as though it has been the longest month, ever. I can’t even remember Christmas anymore…it feels as though it was about 5 months ago now!

January has actually been mostly fine over here – we have been back into school, work, swimming lessons and all our usual life routines again. Harry & Lottie are still loving school and both love their friends so much. They are at such a cute and wonderful age now (5) as they’re both still little, innocent and adorable – and love to be cuddled – but are also more grown up and independent too. I am so proud of the lovely little people that they are.

I’ve been getting back into my weekly fitness schedule and Dave and I are more into our healthy eating habits using My Fitness Pal to track our calorie intake per day – which, honestly, really does work because we have both felt improved results already. We both ate and drank WAY too much over Christmas and so we wanted to feel better about our weight and health again.

The twins have had friends parties’ over the last few weekends so they have been really happy with that and I’ve had some lovely coffee catch-ups with friends, as well as a much needed hair appointment. I have also just booked to have a non-surgical face lift treatment (I kindly got some spa vouchers for Christmas) so I cannot wait. I’ll let you know how that goes via my Instagram soon.

Big Little Lies

Oh, that feeling when you get into a new series and it’s just a-maz-ing. Perfection.

Dave was away last week (for most of the week) and one night I was bored and I somehow stumbled upon it via Now TV. I asked the good people of Instagram whether it was worth starting and SO many replied to say “Absolutely” – and that I would “love it”.

Well I most certainly did.

I won’t give away the plot, story or the dramatic series finale but I haven’t actually been that moved or impressed in a long time. You know when you watch (or read) something and you can’t get it out of your head and it really touches your life? That.

The acting is phenomenal (Reece Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, plus many others) and the life topics they cover are both relatable and also very hard-hitting. If you haven’t seen it yet then you really need to. It’s been such a wonderful series and I’m glad I found it. Can’t wait for season 2 to be made.

Mid-February sees Dave and I celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary, which is really exciting. We’ve both said lately that we’ve felt so much more ‘together’ as a couple and so happy with our relationship. When we met each other we fell madly in love and had a real whirlwind romance, but since we went through IVF then had our baby twins those years were SO hard on us both.

In the early baby stages we pretty much had to ignore each others needs and get on with our job as being busy, doting parents – and very sleep deprived ones at that!

Due to Harry & Lottie now being 5 years old, and both Dave and I feeling incredibly happy with where we are in our personal life, we have been enjoying being a couple again. We’re back into having date nights out and just generally being there for each other in normal life. It’s been so lovely to feel that way again with him and see our relationship grow even stronger.

We’re planning a night away for our wedding anniversary (my lovely parents are coming to look after the twins) and then hopefully a mini-City break together in early summer. Getting away really does make you switch off and relax; it’s so nice to be away from the stresses of parenting and work.

Although I don’t feature him much on my blog or in social media he’s my rock, my best friend, makes me laugh out loud and I adore spending time with him.

Here’s to more lovely things for our little family coming up soon once we approach the onset of spring!

Love, Jess x

What a lovely little catch up post, I’ve only just started reading your blog so it was fun to “get to know you” a bit more!

Big Little Lies is fabulous isn’t it?! Also looking forward to the next season!

I can totally relate to what you say about being a couple, we had some fertility problems too a few years ago and it does take over your life doesn’t it?! We’ve made a pact to have a date lunch/afternoon at the end of every month, this way we don’t have to rely on babysitters! We’re also going to Dublin in a few weeks for hubby (also called Dave!) 40th!! We’ve had holidays away at least once a year with just the two of us since our eldest was 18months old, it’s a relationship must in my book!

No doubt you’ll enjoy all your time away this year too! X x

Aaah loved reading all this about Dave β€” we’re celebrating our anniversary this weekend. I feel the same β€” I am madly in love with my boy. He’s still my favourite person and, like you and Dave, we’ve been though such a lot. Such a lovely catch up Jess xx

I loved this! Happy anniversary for February, I’m glad to hear it is possible to regain some time to spend as a couple after kiddos, even if it is a few years off yet for Kane and I!

Thank you πŸ™‚ Yes it is! We have to make more effort now but it’s so worth it when we do xx

Aww it’s lovely to find out a bit more about your husband – happy ten years! I LOVED Big Little Lies – it really got to me in so many ways and I can’t wait for Season 2 either. Rumour has it that they’ve signed Meryl Streep to play the part of Alexander Skarsgard’s mother, which will be brilliant if it’s true! Also, gorgeous black and white photo of you in the mirror, really beautiful.

Love this style of catch up post, Jess.
Happy wedding anniversary! I know just what you mean about the differing relationship stages that come when you have kids. It’s so nice when they are a little older and you can reinvest in each other on date nights. We seem to have hit another stage of being taxis and PAs to our two at the moment! We really must book some intentional date nights in our overrun diaries! xx

Happy anniversary, I hope you had a gorgeous time together. It’s so important to forget that you came first around all the initially stresses of raising children. I LOVED that series and really looking forward to seeing the next, such a great cast x

First of all, I told you you’d LOVE it!! Isn’t is just the most amazing show. Apparently Meryl Streep has singed up for series 2 and is going to play Perry’s mum. I literally can’t wait.

Secondly, it’s so lovely to read you write about Dave in that way. Dom and I have been together 19 years in the summer and I feel exactly the same, he’s my rock, my best friend and the best person in my life. He makes me crazy mad (like no-one else) but he also makes me happier than anyone else. Happy anniversary to you both and have a great night away xxx
