A master bedroom makeover

A makeover in our master bedroom

You may already know (from this blog and my social media) that I’ve been a tad obsessed with white walls throughout our family home lately. Since moving to our new-build home 12 months ago I have been busy turning all the pre-painted magnolia into modern, contemporary white and enjoying seeing the transformation. It’s made our home light and bright.

But there’s only so much brilliant white that I can live with, and I desperately wanted to go for something more classic and cosy for our master bedroom. Especially with Autumn & Winter approaching too.

The bed in there (a few years old) is a light-brown leather; Chesterfield style. The furniture is black from Ikea. The overall look and feel is quite masculine.

Valspar got in touch with me via Mumsnet recently and asked a few bloggers to make a video regarding trying out their ‘scrubbable’ paint. Of course I said that I’d be delighted to try it out! The paint sounds fantastic for family life and I was excited to pick a colour for the master bedroom.

The brief was to makeover a feature wall so I went for the wall that our bed sits against; the wall you see first when you enter the room.

I decided to try out their colour-match process and selected a lovely cushion we owned in duck egg blue. I took the twins along to our local B&Q and the Valspar expert matched us a paint up. Then it was home to paint!

The paint covered the wall so well, I only needed one coat and then just a bit of touching up afterwards. So pleased with it!

I used a masking tape (Frog Tape) for the wall edges and to make sure it didn’t go into the ceiling and I HIGHLY recommend it. It cut down my painting time drastically. I’ve painted a lot of walls in my time and it’s the best one I’ve ever used.

Valspar claims that their paint can be fully scrubbed (removing any dirty marks) and I was sceptical at first, but it really is hard-wearing! After a few weeks of complete drying we wiped the wall pretty hard with a baby wipe and no paint came off.

Here you can watch the full video of the three bloggers involved (including us) produced by Mumsnet in association with Valspar – and find out how we got on!

Love, Jess x

Such a lovely blue! I’ve not used Valspar paint myself but hear good things about it, and great that they can colour match (my local Dulux Decorator Centre’s scanner is broken, so need to find an alternative!).

Love the colour – very different to your usual choice! We have used Valspar paint a lot in our house and love it. It’s such good quality, and so worth the extra price in my opinion. I have a kids rocking chair which I’m working on upcycling with them actually, I need to make a decision on the colour xx

It looks fab, a great colour to go with your bed, very classy! I will definatley look at that paint when I next have a house to decorate, it looks perfect for my rental properties! Tenants are worse than children.. Was it a lot more expensive than standard emulsion? X

This room looks gorgeous, I love the masculine look and these pics look like something from Pinterest. I’d also have been skeptical at the thought of ‘scrubbable’ paint but sounds like it could be worth a try #HomeEtc xx

Lovely colour Jess, and I am very interested to hear about any paint which is scrubbable! We have grey Farrow and Ball in our current living room which I love. but there are marks all over it where little hands have been and it’s very, very hard to get clean. In our new home I’m torn between grey and dusky pink for our bedroom, but if I go for grey will definitely consider this paint! Good job lovely xx

Jess I love that colour! Such a brilliant colour for a feature wall and it is almost masculine yet feminine (does that make sense?) at the same time! I would love this in our bedroom. Also the fact that you can wipe off scribbles is perfect! Love the film too #HomeEtc

I caught your video the other day via Facebook and it’s so cute, what a great collaboration. Your bedroom looks beautiful, it’s a gorgeous colour. We used Valspar to paint the hanging tiles on the front of the house and they were SO good, I’m hooked on them! X #HomeEtc

Such a beautiful colour! Especially against the brown of the headboard.
I’m a big fan of Valspar and found the pigmentation really impressive. We’ve got it in about half of our house now and even started on the outdoor range painting our garden planters!

Oh, that colour is fabulous, so tranquil and warm rather than a cold colour, if that makes sense! Me and Anamumdiary went to a Valspar demo at B & Q and I love their premade paints too. The room looks fab. I am working at our double office desk with the same Ikea angle lamps….Great minds!

Oh poo on a stick! You’d think I’d know by now #homeetc

Absolutely love the colour, it looks fantastic! x

Looks fab, I have always been tempted to try Frog Tape, but always wondered if it was just a way to make us spend more money haha. I love your bedside lamps too. x

Love the colour, and it matched really well with your cushion. I have heard some good things about Valspar from others too. And being scrubbable is a must with kids, I’ve still got stains from when Vaseline was rubbed into the hallway wall!! #HomeEtc

You chose a lovely color and the whole process looks very easy.
Our bedroom needs a make over as it feels very manly in there!

Big fan of Valspar, have already selected bits of pottery to match for our kitchen (when we finally get rid of the 80’s wooden horror.)

  18. September 29, 2016 / 2:17 pm

Wow the master bedroom looks fab Jess. I love the colour match it came out so well. And that is fantastic that you can just wipe the dirt off! Perfect for family life with young children! x

I adore that colour. The finished result looks beautiful x #homeetc

  20. September 29, 2016 / 10:36 pm

Ah this looks lovely – and great timing as we are thinking about our bedroom at the moment, it’s a very dull off white box at the moment so a bold wall like this would work well I think! x #HomeEtc

What a stunning makeover, that colour works perfectly with the bed too. We have used Valspar paint, in most of our rooms and I wouldn’t buy anything else now!

  22. October 4, 2016 / 11:48 am

Love that colour. It really works. Scrubbable paint sounds like the answer to many prayers! And if it goes on easily and well, that a great recommendation. Thanks for hosting #HomeEtc

The wall looks great Jess. We have gone for duck egg blue in the bathroom. It is a colour I love. Scrubbable paint sounds like just what I need for the whole house 😀
