New Year’s Resolutions for our home

Making New Years resolutions for the home

The beginning of a new year compels me to want to make fresh, new changes in my personal and work life. I also want to make changes to our family home too and get those outstanding jobs completed. After all, our house is a sanctuary that the four of us love to spend a great deal of time in.

Whilst they aren’t major changes that are needed, there are still some jobs to do. We moved into our new-build property about 18 months ago and there are some projects that need finishing and that are bugging me a little. All they need is a bit of focus and effort to get them sorted out!

Setting goals for a home can be uplifting – plus achieving them is SUCH a great feeling!

I like seeing other peoples homes via Instagram where I get a lot of influence and ideas. I also get a lot of inspiration from Pinterestit’s my favourite place to source home & interiors images and get very inspired with key trends and fashion.

Here are some of my favourite images (below) from Pinterest currently including the styles & colours that are catching my eye.

So if you’re feeling ready to set some housey goals too then here is some of my advice below:

//Get organised

In the new year I usually start by having a good clear out, mostly because it makes me feel better but it also helps to minimise my time spent clearing and tidying up all year round. I am then focused on creating storage solutions to help stow away all the stuff we need. I’m talking shoes racks, shelving, wardrobes etc. Dave and I are pretty ruthless with items we haven’t used for a few years; we usually sell it or give it away to charity. De-cluttering is the key to starting any project.

//Decorating

I am going to finish painting over the rest of the magnolia that our new-build home was decorated in when we moved in. The main rooms have been changed but some rooms are still desperate for a new colour. A lick of paint freshens up any space and also signifies new beginnings, plus it is an inexpensive way of updating the décor. I’d like to keep things fresh looking by using white and grey.

//Accessories

Last year I added a lot of new accessories into my home and I have been so happy with them. I went for a lot of modern pieces to compliment our contemporary home.

New accessories for the home for the new year

I’d like to continue with this by adding new cushions, rugs, bedding and prints – as well as adding some practical items too such as blinds and mirrors. I think a few trips to Dunelm, Ikea and Homesense are due soon!

I’ll definitely keep you posted.

So a very Happy New Year to you and do enjoy updating your home too!

Love, Jess x

    Oh those are some beautiful inspirations, and I love the idea of the house having its own resolutions. Ours will be to sell it but then hopefully I will have a lovely new house to decorate!

    I’m just like you. This time of the year comes with that extra bit of motivation that makes you want to really get going with all those little house jobs that you’ve been putting off for months. I have a very big goal for this year and it’s for absolutely everything in our house to have a place to leave. I want to have only what we need and neatly organised. I went as far as to start a Professional Organizer qualification! (that’s how obsessed I have become with organisation recently! lol)

    I love a New Year for this very reason! My Mission this year is to do some serious accessory adopting. The rooms look so bare, but we were a bit strapped last year. Bring on 2017 and loads of pretty things!! xx

    I have just finished my list and have gone through every room in our house and the little/big things that need doing. God it is so good for the soul decluttering too, and guess what I got the other day….. The habitat table and I LOVE it. Husband says it’s a new place for putting useless tat on, but hey what do husband’s know x

    Hi Jess, Happy New Year to you! I love the impetus January gives us for freshening up our homes in readiness for the new year ahead, so I really enjoyed reading your post. I love the look of worn tan leather teamed with monochrome pieces at the moment, so keeping my eyes peeled for a second hand bargain battered old leather armchair! #bloggershomes x

    Decluttered house, decluttered head! My house is fine in terms of clutter but I can’t ignore the clutter zone that is our loft. I’m sure the ceiling is going to come down on us one day, its so full of stuff.

    Yep, looking forward to sorting out the guest room this year. I love a new project. Happy New Year and good luck with your plans, Jess. #HOMEETC

    I always really enjoy having a clear out in January, it makes me feel so refreshed and give me some much needed head space.

    After a break away from Linky Parties and blogging its great to be back on the #HomeEtc bandwagon!

    Such great Home Goals for 2017; I need to get on getting rid of that awful builder-grade magnolia that is everywhere in my new build too, but a) where to start and b) how do you settle on a colour when there is so much choice?! :/

  14. January 11, 2017 / 9:54 pm

    Cracking ideas! You can’t go wrong with more accessories! (haha I’m such an enabler!) But they really do breathe life into a house x

  15. January 12, 2017 / 3:02 pm

    Definitely, feel the same about the new year. I’ve been sorting out cupboards for the last week. I find that if I don’t write a ‘hit list’ and get focussed little jobs at home just drift, it is amazing what you end up living with for a long time, despite it being a constant niggle. Good luck with your projects.

  16. January 12, 2017 / 9:14 pm

    That’s exactly what I’ve been doing – January is the month for a good declutter right?! And then you don’t feel guilty getting new things for the home, hehe 😀

    What a grand idea. There is always the danger of starting one project and turning your attention to another isn’t there. Good luck with your plans and thank you for hosting #HomeEtc

    I have a head full of interiors ideas for 2017. Two big room makeovers and a couple of mini projects. I can’t wait … to sneak in the decorator when Paul’s away 😉 x

    Happy new year to you too Jess. I’m the same at the moment – finish unfinished projects is my goal for this year. There are so many small things to finish around the house. We’ve given the living room a fresh, bright look in just one day, which was a great feeling. Best of luck getting your house changes made.
