Planning a more grown-up playroom

Planning a grown-up playroom

Our playroom should actually be called the ‘dumping room’…because that’s effectively what it has become! One large storage room filled with a lot of plastic bits & pieces. It has completely lost its way and is in dire need of tidying up, care and attention!

I haven’t actually done much to it since we moved into the property (a brand new-build home) nearly 18 months ago. We brought with us the furniture that we had in our last home and we placed it where it fit. The walls are still the same un-inspiring magnolia colour from the first day and there are still no curtains or blinds. I have added some trendy cushions, a funky lampshade and cosy rug into their space, but the colour scheme has gone a little astray.

Having a playroom is actually a real luxury. It means that our main living room can stay tidy and remain the ‘grown-up space’, as their toys can mostly live in the playroom. They can also play in here together and have friends in there when they come over.

It is also a really good size and means that we can house plenty of their toys & games in here (4.7m x 3.3m).

Family spaces: the playroom Planning a stylish playroom Planning a playroom with Dulux

My longer-term plan is continue to use the room as the twins playroom and then when they get older they can share it as their den – i.e. a place to watch DVD’s, play computer games and hang out with their friends. The large, L-shape, corner sofa is therefore useful for the room as it transitions into this relaxing space at a later date.

To help me with my plans, ideas and designs I have booked a consultation with Dulux Amazing Space for this week. The half an hour meeting with a Dulux Design Expert will help me to get some inspiration for the look I’d like to achieve. Included in the £75 is the following:

1/ Firstly you answer some questions online, about your style and the room you want to transform.

2/ Then you have a 30-minute chat to discuss initial ideas with your very own Dulux Design Expert.

3/ Once you’re happy, your Dulux Design Expert will create your unique style guide, which includes a floor plan and 3D room visualisation.

4/ Then you use your style guide and interactive shopping list to bring your amazing space to life.

You don’t have to buy the paint they suggest, nor the accessories/furniture, but they do give you all the links to products you may require as a result of the whole design process.

Although I have been quite inspired myself during the last 18 months at creating a modern style for our family home, I do feel as though I have lost my way a little with colour. I want some help to stop me predominately using white on the walls, and also how to make a room fit for two 4-year-olds that isn’t going to look like a nursery.

I’m really excited at the results of the Dulux Amazing Spaces Consultation and so I’ll keep you posted and share my progress soon!

For now I am pinning the kind of styles I like on my Pinterest Board ‘Cool Kids Spaces‘ here..

What a lovely sized playroom! Think of all the storage you could utilise in there…I’m all about the contemporary grey colour scheme right now, think my whole downstairs (and playroom) is going to be adorned in it! Good luck with your consultation, I’m sure you’ll get lots of fantastic ideas! xx

Playrooms are definitely tricky as they get older. Our definitely became more of a dumping ground. I think white walls are great because then everything else can be bright and changeable. But, grey is great too for the same reasons. We’ve now changed our playroom into a study as I felt having two rooms with sofas and tvs in was too much for us. It’s now a family room with a table, piano, etc where the boys can craft and play. But they now keep their toys in their rooms. #HomeEtc

Grown up playrooms are my most favourite things to work on. I adore making fun spaces for the boys which also feel cool enough for me to want to be in there too. I cannot wait to see what you do. How exciting!!

I loved it when they did ours, they suggested a shutter for an unusual shaped window we have and it’s a great idea. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out xxx

Aaah it’s such a fab space — you’re so lucky to have a separate playroom that you can shut off from the rest of the house. The boys use our snug as a playroom but it’s also a walkthrough room so I always feel that there’s no way of shutting it off and toys seem to get EVERYWHERE!! Can’t wait to see what you do! 🙂 CX #HomeEtc

We redid our playroom earlier this year as like yours it was a dumping ground for plastic tat. As the kids are getting older I wanted a more grown up space for all of us. I loved how it turned out and it still might be full of Katie’s tat but it certainly looks more grown up. Looking forward to seeing the new look x
