The twins move into toddler beds

Moving into toddler beds

We decided to take the sides off Harry & Lottie’s cotbeds around mid-February and make them into toddler beds. I was feeling VERY nervous.

“Why ruin a great bedtime routine? Why make life so much harder for ourselves?”...Hubby and I asked ourselves!

Because (I guess) we felt like it was the right time…and that we had to do it one day.

Harry & Lottie were 2 years and 4 months old. It just seemed right. They were in their own rooms, and it seemed the natural next step.

Lottie got it straight away. She never left her cot once. She literally ‘got on with it’. The only thing she didn’t like was the side being so open, and so we borrowed a cot-side from a friend. And then Lottie was very happy and content.

Harry was a different story. The first week he would constantly get out of bed, mess about, stand on the landing and shout down to us, and generally lark about! He thought it was amazing. He was delighted with this new freedom!

He probably took until 9pm each night to go to sleep that week.

We’d go up (Hubby and I would take turns), trying to keep our cool, saying nothing and place him back into bed. Until Harry eventually wore himself out.

Then after 2 weeks he got less ‘silly’…he probably got bored of the novelty of it all! He really cracked it after about 3-4 weeks.

We now put them both to bed at 7pm and no-one gets up. Both go to sleep so well.

Their little toddler beds look so cute now in their rooms, and they actually really love them. They like climbing in and having a ‘big boy and girl’ duvet and pillow!

It’s been a big step for me too – seeing the cots disappear has really hit home that my babies are growing up fast.

Ah this is such a huge step, we jack and Joe a bubble car bed big mistake for Joe thought it was a climbing frame and took ages to settle took about a month of messing about to finally settle, but I remember the triumph we felt once it was mastered x

Oh dear!! I know. A few days in and we had regretted taking the cot sides to the tip!! Whoooops. There was literally no going back! Jess x

My little one is coming up to 2 years 3 months but I’m too much of a chicken to try him in a toddler bed yet. It was horrendous with our eldest. An absolute nightmare. Poor little Matty will be in his cot until his legs hang out this end 🙂

Oh no – then don’t bother! Don’t rush it!! Just enjoy the fact that he can’t escape just yet! I was contemplating putting Harry back into a cot until he settled into it! 🙂 Jess x

Noah went through a phase of getting up when we switched him to a bed too. We had to do it super early b/c the little monkey used to climb out of his cot. We still sometimes find him asleep in Charlie’s bed when we go up to bed xxx

Oh dear!! Mine never really climbed! That’s quite sweet though, bet mine will do that soon too 🙂 Jess x

Oh you’ve done it!!! We’ve started talking about getting Pops out of her cot too. She’s so ready for a ‘big girl’ bed but I’m not sure I’m ready. While she’s still in that cot, she’s my baby. Well done xxx

Thank you. I was upset to see the cots go too but they look so cute in the bigger beds 🙂 Good luck when you go for it xx

Funny how different they are isn’t it. Lily was like Harry, but Izzy and Eve cracked it straight away! Love those little beds.

Oh I remember that time very well. You are very lucky only one of your twins played up, you did well to remain consistent. My two played up for two weeks solid, then all of a sudden, they just stopped. It was 2 weeks of hell, but consistency of placing them back to bed worked! Two toddler beds are so cute aren’t they.

I am dreading the move to toddler beds, and fully intend on putting it off as long as humanly possible! Kudos to you for going for it, and handling it so well.

Well we nearly caved after a few nights of Harry marching up and down the landing!! Persistence is key! Good luck xx

Well done Lottie and Harry!! I think that my two are going to be slightly more of a challenge. Although they currently go to bed at 7 with no problems, they do run up and down their cots and lark about like loons for a good 10 minutes before going to sleep. At the moment, they’re contained!! Not sure what’s going to happen when they’re free to roam!

Well it went a lot better than we thought. So I am delighted. You’ll be fine I am sure – no rush though. They’ll be ready when they’re ready! Jess x

Oh, those little beds look so cute. Well done Lottie for getting in to the rhythm if a big bed straight away. Ŵe’ve been wondering about when to put Little Miss H into a big bed. This post is really helpful. Thanks so much. Hugs Mrs H xxxx

I remember when we first moved the girls out of their cot and into a toddler bed. We had to go out

  13. April 6, 2015 / 10:14 pm

    oops hit send too quick!
We had to go out and buy locks for all the drawers because they kept trashing their room. Some days we literally had to search for them under clothes and the mattresses!
